SBDI Course

Train the Trainer

PTSI’s Training Academy will provide training tools needed by the school bus transportation trainer – who often wears many hats – in operations both large and small. These tools will help trainers provide clear, concise training to drivers and attendants in their operation. This one-of-a-kind workshop teaches trainers how to teach, by providing knowledge and skills needed to train drivers and attendants correctly the first time, instead of learning by trial and error. Trainers should feel proud of what they already know, but completing this multi-level training academy will make training easier and more effective…increasing the overall safety of your operation by improving specific training skills of the trainer!

The 5 levels can be taken all at once or one at a time. Each level builds on the previous level and must be completed in order. A certificate will be given at the completion of each level.

Violence Prevention & Intervention

Topics Will Include

• Specific strategies to prevent a bad behavior from escalating into a violent behavior
• Behavioral strategies that demonstrate a positive attitude
• How good relationships affect student behavior
• What to do when negative behavior levels increase
• Understanding both non-verbal communication and non-verbal behavior
• Controlling the escalation of behavior using effective verbal interventions
• Using silence to achieve compliance

When All Else Fails

• How to deal with a physical attack
• Strategies that will not develop into a law suit
• Strategies for remaining calm in a physically or verbally abusive incident
• Dealing with the student’s return to the bus

Note

All techniques, strategies and tactics will need to be viewed through your school district or company policies and procedures for dealing with serious problematic behavior on the school bus. PTSI recommends that you become familiar with these policies prior to this training seminar.

School Bus Accident Investigation

This comprehensive, three-day course, taught by PTSI’s Accident Investigation Experts, helps operations improve school bus accident scene management and develop bus accident response policies and procedures. PTSI’s unique course provides classroom instruction and hands-on field work, including photographing, scene measurement and math skills needed for accurate scene reconstruction and documentation. Participants will progress through a logical process to understand accident response readiness as it applies to their operation.

A high level of hands-on class participation will facilitate the objectives each class member brings to the course.

While an accident typically lasts just a few seconds, the physical and psychological chain of events before, during and after a crash can be very complex, and a challenge for pupil transportation staff.

Guidelines on how to document and manage an accident include how to prepare a response to an accident, on-scene procedures, and follow-up. Learn how to sketch an accident scene in detail, use photography, read tire marks, analyze bulbs, measure accurately, collect initial evidence, interview witnesses, and handle media.

CE Course

PTSI’s NYS Department of Motor Vehicles approved Training Course is designed to provide the CE Candidate the tools and knowledge necessary prior to applying to take the DMV-administered 19-A Certified Examiner Test – an important step in seeking supervisor duties within passenger transportation.

• This training course fulfills DMV pre-requisite – a first step in the process
• Covers all regulations and procedures including driver evaluation, compliance and recordkeeping
• State-of-the-art instruction from experienced, well-qualified PTSI instructors

Prerequisites to become a NYS DMV Certified Examiner

• Successful completion of a DMV-approved Certified Examiner training course – (this PTSI Course is qualifies)
• Current Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with proper endorsements
• Licensed for at least 18 months in the class of bus you will be testing/evaluating drivers
• 18 months experience with a 19-A carrier in the past three years
• Two years experience in driver training and evaluation (affidavit of training required)
• Company/school letter of endorsement supporting your application to become a CE
• Clean driving record (less than seven points)

Certified Examiner Refresher

Certified Examiners are required in both law and regulation to attend a New York State DMV approved CE Refresher at least once every three years to maintain certification. PTSI has been offering Refresher Seminars since 1996 – before 1998 regulations required attendance.

Since Refresher topics change annually, attending each year enables CEs to keep up with changes in regulations and learn and share ideas and concerns. In addition, the Refreshers provide an opportunity for networking in what many times is an isolated position. The refresher provides a great opportunity to interact with CEs in your geographical area from all modes of passenger transportation. Anyone can attend the CE Refresher, certification is not required. As a matter of fact, PTSI strongly encourages Motor Carriers to send other employees, such as the person responsible for filing 19-A paperwork, for example. Don’t miss an opportunity to stay current as a CE!
